The UNESCO Chair in Cultural Heritage and Landscape aims to advance contemporary critical studies on cultural heritage through the integrative concept of cultural landscape . This concept, adopted by UNESCO since the 1990s, has led to significant advances in the field of heritage by encompassing both natural and cultural dimensions , as well as the material and immaterial aspects of heritage.
As the first UNESCO Chair in Brazil dedicated to cultural heritage , our goal is to foster interdisciplinary research and collaboration, integrating diverse perspectives on heritage conservation and landscape management, strengthening the connections between scientific research and development policies. Based on existing advanced studies and relevant outreach projects, we seek to promote a holistic understanding of cultural heritage within its broader environmental and social contexts.
Among the main objectives of the Chair are: to conduct innovative research on cultural landscapes , to facilitate the exchange of knowledge and capacity-building activities, and to organize high-impact events, such as the Ibero-American Colloquium on Cultural Landscape, Heritage and Design , held since 2010. Through these activities, we seek to contribute to the preservation, appreciation, and sustainable management of cultural sites and landscapes in Brazil and other regions.

Additionally, the activities of the group responsible for the Chair focus on Ibero-American integration , in collaboration with researchers from Argentina, Colombia, Chile, Peru, Mexico, Portugal, Spain , among others, as well as on strengthening other South-South partnerships with countries such as Mozambique and China .
The UNESCO Chair in Heritage and Cultural Landscape aims to be a platform for interdisciplinary dialogue, collaboration, and advocacy , engaging academics, practitioners, policymakers, and community representatives in critical discussions about heritage conservation and landscape care. By promoting a comprehensive approach to heritage, we seek to support inclusive and sustainable development practices that ensure the protection of our shared cultural heritage for future generations.
