The UNESCO Chair in "Heritage and Cultural Landscape" has as one of its pillars the production of critical, innovative, and applied scientific knowledge. Its research activities are developed in a network , involving universities, research centers, heritage bodies, and civil society organizations, with the aim of understanding, valuing, and proposing sustainable strategies for the preservation and management of cultural assets and cultural landscapes.

Research Areas

The main lines of research developed within the Chair include:

  • Cultural landscapes, heritage and territory
    Studies on the relationships between culture, space, memory, and identity in urban and rural territories.

  • Critical theories of heritage
    Epistemological approaches to cultural heritage, including coloniality, diversity of knowledge, and epistemic justice.

  • Asset management and public policies
    Evaluation and proposal of planning instruments and policies for the participatory and sustainable management of heritage sites.

  • Heritage, environment and climate change
    Studies on the resilience of cultural territories in the face of environmental risks, disasters, and socio-ecological transformations.

  • Digital technologies applied to heritage
    Collaborative cartography, digital platforms, participatory mapping, and the use of geotechnologies.

  • Revitalization Plan for the Cultural Landscape of Serro (MG)
    Developed in partnership with IPHAN and UNESCO, linking academic research and preservation practices in local contexts.

  • Mapping cultural territories in peripheral urban areas
    Participatory projects in medium and large cities focusing on living heritage and affective cartographies.

  • Comparative studies of Ibero-American landscapes
    Collaborative projects with researchers from Argentina, Chile, Portugal, and Spain, among other countries.

  • Research on housing policies and cultural heritage
    An analysis of the relationships between the right to housing, urban memory, and preservation in historical centers and vulnerable areas.

  • Cultural Landscape and World Heritage Management: subjects, instruments and approaches. Funding: CNPq and Faperj.
